A former viceroy of Estoty, Prince Ivan Temnosiniy, father of the children's great-great-grandmother, Princess Sofia Zemski (1755-1809), and a direct descendant of the Yaroslav rulers of pre-Tartar times, had a millenium-old name that meant in Russian 'dark-blue.' ...Van could not help feeling esthetically moved by the velvet background he was always able to distinguish as a comforting, omnipresent summer sky through the black foliage of the family tree. In one of his "Загробные песни" (Songs from the Hereafter, 1902) K. K. Sluchevski (1837-1904) speaks of the temnosinyaya noch' (dark-blue night) of death: Вдруг объяла меня темно-синяя ночь...
On the other hand, in his travel notes "По северо-западу России" (Along the North-West of Russia, "From Teriberka to the Ara guba") Sluchevski mentions the aquamarine of sea waters and a darker velvet line where the sea meets the sky: А Ледовитый океан при ярком солнечном свете обладает богатыми красками; разрезываемая клипером вода цвета зеленого, выступающего с особенной яркостью, благодаря безусловной белизне пены, расстилающейся по ней кружевом; дальше, там, где, по-видимому, волн больше, где они пестрят своими несчетными гребнями, становящимися за далью как бы малыми гребешками, и наконец исчезают, эта искрящаяся зелень переходит в глубокую синь, в сильнейший аквамарин. На самом горизонте на севере этот аквамарин сгущается в одну могучую бархатную черту, проведенную гигантской рукой живописца, как бы сказавшего этим: “тут небо, тут водное пространство; никогда им не смешиваться!”, и голубое небо, как оно ни лазурно, не переходит заветной бархатной черты глубочайшей сини водной пучины, способной, как люди, на страсти, на страдания и на великие радости.
Sluchevski is also the author of the narrative poems "В снегах" (In the Snows, 1879) and "Ларчик" (A Small Box, 1878). One of the two characters in the former is a woman who had a romance with her brother. In the latter, the hero discovers a small box in the attic, and his find changes his life dramatically. In Ada's first chapter the young lovers Van and Ada discover, among other old things in the attic of Ardis Hall, Marina's herbarium and deduce with its help that they are brother and sister.
