Evil Twins and the Ultimate Insight: Ayn Rand, Vladimir Nabokov, and the Polarized Politics of Reading

By brucestone411, 30 October, 2024

Evil Twins explores how the works of Ayn Rand and Vladimir Nabokov illuminate (and arbitrate) the political polarization in the United States. The inquiry proceeds by indirection, led on by four scholarly books, all of which speak to the peculiar relationship between Nabokov and Rand: each of these books is flawed, but their respective problems dovetail and coalesce to reveal how literature might constitute, not deliver, a civics lesson.

Put another way: Evil Twins is a multi-book review that mutates into something more expansive. It aims to tell readers (within and beyond academia) everything they need to know about Rand, and much that they never suspected about Nabokov. For what it's worth, the book probably reads better in print.
