The book includes interpretations proposing an alternative reading of Nabokov's texts by looking for microstructures of motivic knots and patterns, forming the integrity of Nabokov's worldview. The concept of the erotext, connecting the bliss of the textual and the sexual detaches the analysis from the non-literal reading as a copy of life. Nabokov's paths of initiation lead the reader to transcend borders: those of the Ego and imaginary norms, the limits of knowledge and memories, of space and time, up to the threshold of the otherworldly – to ecstasy. A writer with synaesthesia and polyglot, he delved into the smallest visual units of the text, crushing, mixing, and composing words, bringing things to life, or making automatons out of characters. He creatively was inspired by a broad literary context.
Shifts reveal previously hidden layers, maintain tension, and create new qualities. As such shifts can be understood the exile/emigration itself, polyglossia and synesthetic capacities of the author, provocation in the field of ethics and eroticism, the vibrant ambivalence of the focus, and the loosening of the role of the author. Nabokov's role as the forerunner of the postmodern manifests itself in the shifts in the foundations of normativity.
