I recently had our Media Center rent the filmed interview that Charles
Nicol had posted about a few weeks ago; the interview, by Hughes, I
think, was one included in STRONG OPINIONS. Charles had said it
was available on video, having been transferred from 16mm., but
Indiana U (from whom we got it) sent the film. I must say that
both the audio and visual quality were fairly poor (grainy picture
with stripes in it, blurry sound), but my students and I really
enjoyed watching the interview anyway (as we were finishing our
discussion of LOLITA). It was wonderful to see Nabokov in
the media-mediated flesh and to hear his delightful voice and
see him describe his writing process, things he detests, etc.,
all the while looking like a kindly old grandfather. I recall
that Charles said the video might have better sound quality;
I wonder if it has better visual quality. I would still recommend
seeing the interview, although if one can insist that the video
rather than 16mm. be sent, one would probably be better off (not
least because then one can rewind or fast forward easily). I
don't have the rental info. at hand, but perhaps Charles'
previous posting is still available or others will have the
info.

(P.S. I concur that it would be wonderful to have a listing of
all audio-visual materials available on Nabokov.)
