Professor Vesterman seems to have forgotten that *Invitation to a
Beheading* is, after all, a translation of the Russian original. The
English version of the passage quoted renders the Russian one very closely:
> Kuda, kuda... -- peredraznil ego m-s'e P'er, -- izvestno kuda.
Chik-chik >delat'.
I can assure you that Russian onomatopoeic "chik-chik" is even more
expressive than its English echo.
