feminine and therefore weak. The reference to her, and a sharp imitation
of Akhmatova's style in Pnin are telling (and she was quite offended by
that, as recorded in both Kornei Chukovski's and his daughter's published
diaries). But then I doubt he knew anything she wrote after 1922, which
was much better than the verse upon which her early fame rested. GB
