It strikes me as particular ironic that Nabokov chose to feature the door
which is associated with one of the Victorian most famous romances in a
work on Gogol, of all people, who was not particularly known (to use a
Victorian understatement) for his romantic feelings towards women. An
accident -- or a fully-intended gesture?
