Issue #31 of THE NABOKOVIAN (Fall 1993) has just appeared. THE
NABOKOVIAN, founded some 15 years ago and most ably edited by Stephen Jan
Parker, appears semi-annually. Published by the International Nabokov
Society, it is unquestionably the most useful single publication in
Nabokov studies. It contains news of the field, annotations & queries,
abstracts, and an annual VN bibliography. It may be obtained by sending $9
($11 for institutions) to: THE NABOKOVIAN, Slavic Languages and
Literatures, The University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas 66045. Overseas
postage is additional. Checks should be made out to the Vladimir Nabokov
Society. Subscription to THE NABOKOVIAN automatically makes one a member
of the VN Society. (Such membership, incidentally, is requisite for
publication in NABOKOV STUDIES.)
The current issue is particularly valuable in that it contains
Gennady Barabtarlo's Index to all thirty issues. Brian Boyd continues his
list of annotations to ADA. The current 30+ page installment covers Part
I, Chapter 2. Steve Parker provides 14 pages of 1992 bibliography for VN.
The Annotations & Queries section, edited by Charles Nicol, offers three
extended notes: Gerard de Vries discusses circle symbols and VN's
cosmology; Earl Sampson comments on "The Tree with Heart-Shaped Leaves in
PNIN; and Galya Diment offers her thoughts on the names of the hero and
the narrator of PNIN.
One of the more surprising things (to me) about NABOKV-L
subscribers is how many of them do not show up on the subscription list to
THE NABOKOVIAN. Every serious Nabokov scholar should be getting it. So
should your libraries. It is a basic research tool.
