I pass the following query on to the net with the following Editor's
comment. I hope it will trigger someone's clearer recollection or, better
yet, exact knowledge. I have a hazy recollection from some childhood book
of science tricks that if you stare at a red? image intensely for a while
and then turn off the light in a dark room you will see an after image in
a different color. Perhaps called a "complimentary" color? Does this ring
any bells with anyone?

NABOKOVIANS:

What is the nature of the "mnemonic trick" which causes Hugh Person, in
chapter 2 of Transparent things, to remember the hotel's cherry red
shutters as being apple green?
