DEar Phillip Scott (& other interested parties), Mayne Reid
(1818-1883) was an Anglo-Irish writer of adventure stories (sometimes)
set in the Wild West. The most famous is THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN. Reid's once
great popularity has long faded, except in Eastern Europe where his work is
still avidly read and has formed an image of America for many generations
of boys. Nabokov structures part of Chapter X of SPEAK, MEMORY around
Reid's HEADLESS HORSEMAN. I did a paper on Reid's "influence" on Nabokov
for the Nabokov conference in Nice in June of 1992. The papers (in short
form) will soon be available in a special issue of the French journal
CYCNOS. Details on requests. Don Johnson
