It was a "libertine" translation, as Brian Walter suggests, but Amis is
probably also aware -- as many of us are -- that Nabokov's literary tastes
were equally "homosexual." So it was not, after all, that much of a
misrepresentation. In this particular case, Nabokov was trying to avoid
having to deal with Babette Deutsch who, he was afraid with some
justification, would have been the first name to spring to the publisher's
mind as translator.
