I read Bend Sinister when I was 15 and appreciated its cleverness. However,
I got the incorrect impression that all of his books were as overtly
political as that one, and for a while tended to associate VN with Kafka.
It wasn't until reading Lolita on a re-recommendaiton two years later that a
strong enthusiasm for VN developed. Lolita seems to be the most accessible
of the books (at least for American readers), and probably the best
introduction to VN.
