Dolorologists,

Andrew Brink's new book, _Obsession and Culture: A Study of Sexual
Obsession in Modern Fiction_ (Madison: Fairleigh Dickinson University Press,
1996), includes a fairly extensive chapter on _Lolita_: "Love and Death in
Vladimir Nabokov's _Lolita_: A Fantasy Analysis of an Obsession."
Brink begins by noting that _Lolita_ "is perhaps the
quintessentially obsessive heterosexual narrative of recent times" (98). He
goes on to contend that Boyd's biography of VN "does not fully replace
Andrew Field's" 1986 Nabokov book, stating that "the issues of
psychopathology that Field began to address cannot be so easily relegated as
Boyd attempts to do" (99).
Things get more (or less, depending on one's tastes) interesting
from there.
