EDITOR'S NOTE. Darrin English and T. Chapman Wing independently make the
observation below, while Joh Humphreys notes the OED the term "Shammar"
as "a member of a Beduoin tribe in Saudi Arabia. These seconday/tertiary
associations may be lurking in the background, but the French "chameaux"
is certainly primary.

Also, Shamo is, I believe, the Chinese name for the Gobi. Is it possible VN
knew this as well?
