EDITOR's NOTE. My thanks to novelist Donald Harington
<dharingt@comp.uark.edu> for catching my error re the publisher of VN's
desk dictionary. Harington's neo-Lolitesque novel _Ekaterina_ may be
sampled on the Nabokov WEB site ZEMBLA

A minor correction to your posting.
I too have been using the "American Heritage" dictionary with its
eagle/moth on the brown cover, ever since it was first published, but it
was published by Houghton Mifflin, not Random House. Perhaps recent
editions of the work have been taken over by Random House (and converted
to CD-ROM?) but for many years it was the property of Houghton Mifflin --
and it remains the very best dictionary for general use.
