All of which seems strange to me. The poor students got their similes
mixed, for "wading through" WET sand is relatively easy (unless they be
sharp-hooved or cart-wheeled) and in any event is easier than negotiating
dry sand (let alone the sawdust often packed inside their heads). The
honey-try struck me as especially absurd.
In general, the rhythm of reading ought not to be a matter of
personal taste; few people realise and fewer are taught that real books
MUST, as a ground rule, be waded through slowly and gingerly, one's steps
retraced at every turn, compass consulted etc. GB
