I'm with Dolinin. His exegesis sounds more convincingly Nabokovian than
Professor Naiman's -- and, he backs it up with the Russian version of the
text.
I also had problems with the indecency unearthed by Naiman: it's just not
like the writer we all think we know. "Eryx", "Kitzler", absolutely -- but
vocabulary on this level? I don't think so. Also, Professor Naiman's
"tautology" strikes me as just a wee tad too farfetched.
It was fascinating to read both opinions, nonetheless.
