Has anyone explored the possible connection between John
Ray and the popular singer of the 50's, Johnny Ray? As I
recall, his single "Cry" was a big seller during the
period that Nabokov would have been working on the novel.
Given Nabokov's interest in popular culture, a connection
seems plausible.
