I don't recall if the following appeared amongst the flurry of attempts at
Lehmann annotation:
A. G. Lehmann published a book on synaesthesia, _The Symbolist Aesthetic in
France 1885-1895_ (1950).
He distinguishes between "the spontaneous feeling such as that E-flat 'is'
green, white is pure, or the rose's perfume sad, or any like coupling of
sensa or feelings; and the deliberate trading on these couplings by
artists" (211-12).
