EDITOR's NOTE. "Father's Butterflies" is the title assigned to a hither-to
unpublished addendum to THE GIFT. It will appear in a volume called
NABOKOV's BUTTERFLIES, edited by
Brian Boyd and Robert Pyle that gathers all of Nabokov's butterfly
writings. It is due out on 1 April 2000.
----------------------------
1) the 4000-word excerpt from _Father's Butterflies_ (the addendum to The
Gift) will be published in the Independent on Sunday this Sunday, March
12. It's an attractively-presented package, and for those outside the UK
with a good international newsagency available might be worth seeking out.
It's the first part-publication of what had remained VN's longest
unpublished fiction, a difficult piece which you might appreciate more for
immersing yourself gradually.
2) Sterne also features of course in LOLITA, Part 2 Chapter 25, Humbert's
poem, in the line: "I cannot get out, said the starling."
