Perhaps the central theme of American Beauty is not sexual, but an
appreciation of the details of the world, including its more or less bizarre
inhabitants. The Hayes/Haze reference is a clue to think about another N.
novel::
Might anyone else recognize the plastic bag playing in/with the wind, and
the voice over commentaries, as coming directly from The Eye?
Judging the film as aspiring to compete with N. is unfair.....perhaps
well-executed, interesting, provocative are sufficient. And really no more
politically incorrect than Casablanca or the Wizard of Oz!
