hermaphrodites: form & content

EDITOR's NOTE. I would take exception to the last line of this. It seesm
to me that it is precisely the uncanny "fit' between elegant expression
and its meaning is VN's hall mark.

On the (supposedly defunct) topic of the 'hairy hermaphrodite', I'm also
of the view that there is a danger of 'symbolising' all of the great man's
work. We must not forget that Nabokov repeatedly tells us that style is a
vital factor in his writing. The balance and elegance of a phrase or
sentence can be more important than its content.
