Where did the review appear? The Hofstadter translation sounds like the
perfect proof of the superiority of VN's theory of translation (not to
mention his other qualifications as a translator of Pushkin), which
Hofstadter characterized as a virtual manifesto of evil in his Le Ton
Beau de Marot. Those who think Nabokov's polemics captious or unbalanced
should take a look at Hofstadter.
