In The Wall Street Journal, April 22, Peter Lubin writes on some of
the VN exhibits (p. A20). He says,
"...It [N.Y. Public Library exhibit] is not the first, nor will it be
the last, exhibit devoted to that fabulous tarand who is now widely
recognized as one of the most important writers, in English and Russian,
of this or any century..."
What does "tarand" mean? Oxford English Dictionary tells me it is
probably a reindeer (archaic) or else something chameleon-like. My guess
is that Lubin uses it in a Nabokovian sense. If so, where does Nabokov
use it?
