Mr. Miale's approach is exactly what I was looking for. A very free, and yes,
an almost breezy, sweeping view of the novel, what movies can only do
anyway. But the build up of correct images can communicate the emotional
feel of Pale Fire, which is all movies can do anyway. Movies can rarely
communicate the literal meaning of a work of literature. Just the emotional
depth.
And William Macey as Kinbote is brilliant. Trying to think of who could
play Shade and his wife. Bruce Willis, after somebody slapped some sense
into him?
