Dear Don,
last week's conference (15-18 October) on Russian Emigre Literature (1917
through 1991), hosted by the Slavic Studies Department of the Johannes
Gutenberg-Universitaet Mainz, included two presentations on Nabokov (Prof.
Wolfgang Kissel, University of Bremen, "Samoutverzhdenie v izgnanii: Momenty
prozreniya v avtobiografii _Speak, Memory_" and my talk on "Exilerfahrung in
Nabokovs russischen und amerikanischen Erzaehlungen" (Emigre Experience in
Nabokov's Russian and American Stories)). The conference host, Prof. Frank
Goebler, spoke about the questions as to whether one could define a poetics of
emigre literature, and he devoted a large section of his talk to Nabokov's
works.
One of the highlights of the conference was an evening of readings by Vladimir
Arro, Zinovij Zinik, and Boris Khazanov.
The public library of Mainz will be showing an exhibition of publications by
emigre authors until mid-December. One of the glass cases includes a display
of books by and about VN. The opening of the exhibition (which was also the
opening night of the conference) drew a large audience of Russian emigres
living in Mainz and of people associated with the Slavic Studies Department.
