On behalf of the Nabokov Museum, St.Petersburg
I'd like to express our immense gratitude to those of you who donated money
to the Friends of Nabokov Museum organization.
By mutual agreement Terry Myers will shortly transfer a large portion of the
money accumulated on the FNM account ($8500). This money will not go to pay
the rent debt. Instead, it will go for the development of the museum - new
display cases and new lighting. Our collection is growing and we desperately
need new equipment.
I hope all of you our donors will understand our
decision. Let me explain our reasons. For a year now we've been fighting to
receive a rent-free status. Our conviction was that the Nabokov memorial
museum should not be made to pay the rent for using a small part of the
Nabokov house. A memorial museum cannot depend on changing conditions of
short-term rent. We felt that "our" writer and our museum were certainly
important enough for the Russian culture to receive support from the
government.
In our campaign we were helped by many distinguished Russian cultural
figures. Our joint efforts brought visible results when Governor Matvienko
received a letter from Dmitri Nabokov in which he expressed full support of
our request. Ms.Matvienko has already made arrangements with the city
officials to solve the rent problem and to give all necessary help to the
museum. The museum will definitely stay in the Nabokov house.
Again, many thanks to all of you.
