In honor of both VN's and Shakespeare's birthdays, here are two pics of
"Cowslips."
"Van: 'That yellow thingum' (pointing at a floweret prettily depicted on an
Eckercrown plate) '--is it a buttercup?'
Ada: 'No. That yellow flower is the common Marsh Marigold, Caltha
palustris. In this country, peasants miscall it 'Cowslip,' though of course
the true Cowslip, Primula Veris, is a different plant altogether.'"
Perhaps, in five hundred years or so, VN will be as towering a presence in
lit as Shakespeare is now.
Incidentally, VN's use of "floweret" here might seem to call into question
the notion that when Shade says he's "ready to become a floweret," he means
a homosexual like Kinbote.
