DN on Brocken Spectre ("third man")

Dear DN,
Thank you for this very interesting information. I seem to recall
something
I always considered to be an expression of some religiosity about
Shackleton, I believe. He and who? (Scott perhaps in their early
expedition)
and a reference to a "third" who seemed to accompany them.
Perhaps this too was "BS"? (sorry for silly pun)
Carolyn
p.s. Can anyone verify this story or is my memory playing tricks? I
looked
in all the polar exploration books I have at home and cannot find
anything
like this. Nor have I managed to google up anything.
[EDNOTE. Charles and Carolyn once again are thinking along the same
lines (see his just posted message on Eliot and Shackleton). -- SES]
