The lines CHW and JF quote are the poem attributed to John
Shade in VN's 1965 draft foreword to SM. Brian Boyd makes much
of it in VNAY. Before going to press, VN apparently thought
better of it and replaced those lines with the ones you quoted.
I agree with CHW, btw, that this is just a bit of light verse.
Did Windex, the window cleaning solution, exist at the time VN
wrote his "wind ex"?
