I see that you are right. I've since found a specific case of yet another medium floating a mandolin. See the last paragraph on this page:

And I also agree that the pale jellies are ectoplasm. I remember when I was looking up James Coates, I laughed aloud at some of his "photographs of the invisible," including one where a baby is seen emerging from a woman's nose via a spume of ectoplasm (looked like a hanky to me).
Suellen mentioned theosophy, and I agree that IPH seems to be a match for Madame Blavatsky's movement--especially the notion of planets being the landfall of souls, astral planes. Recall that Oswin Bretwit spent his time in Paris reading theosophy and books on chess.
