In chapter 41 of Nicholas Nickelby I found the incident I was thinking of, but the vegetables thrown over the wall at Mrs Nickleby (the object of the madman's desire) consist of first a large cucumber, then a fine marrow which is followed by "a shower of onions, turnip-radishes, and other small vegetables."
No cabbages.
