Slighty humorous, but I detect more than a little bit of hopeless
bitterness. Creative genius is still respected, you just have to know how to
market yourself or find someone who's interested in doing it for you. Look
at William T. Vollmann, David Foster Wallace, and the popular McSweeney's
Writers themselves who all make out very well, not to mention several other
excellent writers making money from fiction who are still going at it. John
Barth, Thomas Pynchon (these two are quite old but still going), etc.
