In reference to the Nabokovs and University, Brian Boyd writes that VN was
admitted to Trinity College, Cambridge as a
"'pensioner,' a student who pays his own way--although he remembers having
received some scholarship 'awarded more in atonement for political
tribulations than in acknowledgement of intellectual merit.'" (p. 166 The
Russian Years)
