SIGHTING: Sontag on VN

I don't know if this sighting has been reported before :
When reading a recent translation of Susan Sontag's At the Same Time: Essays and Speeches I read her acceptance speech for the Jerusalem Prize (9. May 2000). She quotes Nabokov while recognizing that novels are not built out of ideas but by shapes. Her reference comes in parenthesis and I don't have the exact words in English: "(As Vladimir Nabokov said: "The pattern of the thing comes before the thing")." Her text was originally published by The Los Angeles Times Book Review (June 10,2001).
