Abstract
An attempt to see the poem "Pale Fire" on its own, as John Shade's (and Vladimir Nabokov's) poem, without considering it in relation to Kinbote's commentary or Nabokov's novel, especially in terms of the structural, imagistic, sonic and rhyming patterns of the poem, and their implications for Shade's and Nabokov's sense of design in life. An introduction to an edition of the poem (in pseudo-manuscript and in print) as if it were by Shade rather than Nabokov.
