On the Original of Cheepy: Nabokov and Popular Culture Fads
Abstract
On the source for Cheepy in the original Kamera obskura (but not in Laughter in the Dark), artist George Studdy's craze, in magazines and postcards, from 1921 to the early 1930s. Nabokov posted a Bonzo postcard (with links to the vivisection theme) to his pupil Sergey Kaplan, and mentioned the craze in his story "Perfection."
