Nabokov’s Transition from Russian to English: Repudiation or Evolution?
Abstract
Challenges Alexander Dolinin's 2005 claim in "Nabokov as a Russian Writer" that Nabokov in his years of English success engaged in "tricky myth-making," downplaying his Russianness and his debt to Russian language literature, and the value of his Russian in comparison with his English works, and emphasizing that he was a born cosmopolitan.
Delivered in shorter form as a paper at the Transitional Nabokov conference, Oxford, 2007, organized by Will Norman and Duncan White. Reprinted as ch. 14 of Brian Boyd, Stalking Nabokov.
