EDITOR'S NOTE. Maurice Couturier <couturier@unice.fr>, the author of many
books and articles on VN and editor of the Pleiade Edition of VN's
collected works, supplies the following background information on the
VN-Pivot interview. Although the video is commercially available, it
would be good toknow whether a French video cassette of the VHS SECAM
persuasion is compatable with American VCRs.
------------------------------------------------
I quoted that interview with Pivot in one of my books. Nabokov had insisted
that the French translation of his books be exhibited at the front of the
desk where he was sitting in order to conceal the notes he was reading
from. Naturally, all the questions had been prearranged, but he fooled a
number of people who did not notice that he was reading his notes. There
was also a teapot near him, and Pivot repeatedly offered him some tea with
a beaming smile; it turned out that the teapot was filled with scotch.
The video tape is still available in France.
