The February 12, 1996, issue of THE NEW YORKER includes David Remnick's
article "Perfect Pitch." In this essay on the life and work of Joseph
Brodsky, Remnick writes: "As a poet, he was not slowed down or
disoriented by the English in the air. He said that he rejected the
bravura multilingualism of Nabokov, but ('What the hell, ya?') he
wrote most of the Essays in 'Less Than One' and 'On Grief and Reason'
in English." (p. 45)
