JD: “ With Nabokov it was literary love at first sight... through words and images he leads the reader to inquire himself , for example, about the color of the shadow of an apple. My first challenge was the translation of “Pale Fire”… Since I’m probably the Brazilian translator who worked with the greatest amount of novels by Nabokov it is not surprising that, at times, I felt the presence of the master looking over my shoulder to help me find the “correct word,” actually the only word that he, like a goldsmith, fetched from his linguistic universe in which Russian, French and English gloriously comingled.”

[…] “Many Nabokov novels were followed by “annotations” written by specialists, who investigate their hidden complex references, but I don’t think that this detective task should be pursued by a translator: his task is limited to transporting into his vernacular what the author decided to show on the surface of his text.” <<...>> <<...>>
