V.D. Nabokov, the affairs and near-affairs); the traces of
history in his art; Nabokov’s
downplaying of the importance of history (the Bolshevik
Revolution was both “that trite deus ex machina” and a series of
“fabulous upheavals”);
his construction of himself as a historical figure in his own
right; the boundaries of/cross-fertilization among
