Jerry Friedman: I'm also interested in "feuilles
d'alarme". I can't find this in Google Books except for uses that seem to
be later than PF and to refer to alarm systems for buildings. Did Nabokov
make it up? If so, is it amusing or connected to something in some way?
Jansy Mello: "the flashing of
tinfoil scares in the hillside vineyards". (CK to line 408) V.Nabokov's
original in English. In my translation of PF to the French I found
"épouvantails de papier d'étain" (Feu Pâle,
translated by Raymond Girard and Maurice-Edgar Coindreau, Gallimard, 1965). I
would be interested to learn where "feuilles d'alarme" has been
employed!
