Dear editors, this is a big mistake, that you finished discussion on
this very important topic.
Any monopoly, include the rights of heirs, should have some reasonable
limits. Who can stop
the scholar research, the human mind, new ideas? What kind of
Inquisition they represent?
They have their estate rights to grab the money from every new edition
or every mention of their
"breadwinner", but not to choose the direction of new approaches.
EDComment: I didn't close discussion of the problems of copyright, nor
expressions of protest over the state of current Nabokov publishing
contracts (from those who have specific knowledge or experience with
these). Nevertheless, I think most abstract discussions of copyright
law (and intellectual property) are inappropriate for this list, and I
will approve only contributions that are carefully presented and
address the topic in ways clearly relevant to Nabokov.
