Jansy, thanks! But I object to your characterizing Wilson's objections to the EO translation as "misunderstanding" -- he disagreed vehemently, as do I, with what VN, near criminally in my (our?) opinion did in botching what really should have been a masterpiece of translation. How many opportunities do we have in literary history for a bi-lingual poetic genius to translate a great work in one of his native languages (I consider English and French as well as Russian to be "native" to VN) into what should have been a masterpiece in another? And VN refused to do it! And for what? I can never understand or forgive ...
