Sorry but isn't hate-as-a-facade-for-jealousy the easiest & most automatic interpretation of the hate phenomenon? I don't see how Nabokov's detractors are any different from other writers who criticize their fellow colleagues, which begs the question: couldn't you extend your claim to anyone who has been critical of a writer? I don't think that's a very worthy thesis.
