VNS at MLA 2012: Pale Fire at 50

Five decades after its first appearance, Pale Fire remains in many ways a mystery to its readers. While some of its riddles have been decisively solved, and solutions have been proposed for others, the novel's most basic elements still escape final conclusions. Pale Fire is a text that both encourages and resists scholarly examination of all sorts.

This call is for the Vladimir Nabokov Society Panel at MLA, Seattle, Washington, January 2012

VNS at MLA 2012: Nabokov as a Travel Writer. Whether by car, rocket, or their imaginations, many of Nabokov’s characters are prodigious travelers. And so, of course, was Nabokov himself. The theme of travel speaks loudly through all the periods, languages, and genres of Nabokov’s writing. It is interwoven with the crucial issues of exile, personal as well as cultural identity, time and timelessness.

Please submit a one-page proposal by March 1 to Galya Diment at galya@uw.edu.

Participants must be 2011 members of MLA and VNS by April 7.
