Thanks for finding that N&Q, Matt. That has Southey, the
phrase in PF, /and/ the phrases that Nabokov quoted in his
draft note. Of course it's perfectly possible that he
read something else too, such as Fittis, or the original
book--VN studied and worked at universities with enormous
libraries that might have a book like that.
The snippet of N&Q that I saw linked from the page you
provided showed "venit season" as two words, so no
clue there.
I may have jumped to a conclusion about the draft note;
I thought the comparison to Joyce was something Nabokov
believed, but maybe it was only something he was
considering giving to a character (as he eventually did).
I'd like to ask Brian Boyd: Was there anything in the
context that showed which it was?
