I
turned a friend on to this book who made a similar argument that
Humbert was at least a good father in the sense that he took care of
her and educated her. I suppose there is a point here to be made, but
its mitigated I think by the fact Humbert's motivation had little or
nothing to do with rearing a fully rounded human being--most of that
stuff seems like it was done to pass time until he could make time with
Lolita or else try wipe out everything about her that made him bristle,
i.e. almost everything about the poor girl. Also it's not like that
education did her much good; he taught her much more about life in
other ways.
