When writing about the five-petaled lilac, I
think VN would remember (and would want the reader to remember) not
Sluchevsky's "The Ghost," but this poem by Blok (written in 1914 and dedicated,
I believe, to his lover, the singer Liubov' Delmas):
Я помню нежность ваших плеч
Они застенчивы и чутки.
И лаской
прерванную речь,
Вдруг, после болтовни и шутки.
Волос червонную
руду
И голоса грудные звуки.
Сирени темной в час разлуки
Пятиконечную
звезду.
И то, что больше и странней:
Из вихря музыки и света

Взор, полный долгого привета,
И тайна верности... твоей.
I translate only the relevant lines (ll. 7-8): "[I remember] ...the
five-pointed star of a dark lilac."
